How the test works
The test sends small requests from your browser to servers in major cities around the world and measures the round-trip time (latency) until a response comes back. Results are processed to reduce the impact of momentary spikes. A city that does not respond within a certain time is treated as a timeout.
The simple speed test estimates your effective connection speed using randomly generated test data in your browser. Only generated dummy data is used; no files or personal information from your device are sent.
How to read the results
Results are sorted from fastest to slowest, with the closest (fastest) city shown at the top. As a rough guide for latency:
- Under 50 ms (Excellent): comfortable even for online gaming and video calls.
- 50 to 150 ms (Good): web browsing and video streaming feel practically instant.
- Over 150 ms (Slow): you may notice lag in real-time applications.
The closest city is not always the geographically nearest one. Traffic does not necessarily follow the shortest path; depending on your ISP's interconnection points and submarine cable routes, a more distant city can respond faster.
Tips for improvement
If latency or speed is worse than expected, check the following points in order.
- Use a wired LAN connection instead of Wi-Fi. The wireless segment adds delay easily through radio interference and distance, so rule it out first.
- Restart your router and modem (ONU). Devices that have been running for a long time can slow down and respond sluggishly.
- Temporarily disable VPNs and proxies. Every extra hop on the route inevitably adds latency.
- Measure again outside busy hours. Shared segments of the line tend to get congested at night, lowering speeds.
Frequently asked questions
Why do the results change every time?
Latency constantly fluctuates with route congestion and wireless signal conditions. Judge by the trend across several runs rather than a single result.
How much data does the test use?
The latency requests are tiny, so measuring all cities uses very little data. The simple speed test, however, transfers roughly 9 MB per run. Be careful about repeated runs on mobile plans with strict data caps.
Why does the measurement fail?
Browser extensions such as ad blockers, or the security policy of a corporate network, may block the measurement requests. Try temporarily disabling extensions or switching to another network.
