IP Address Lookup (Location)

Enter any IP address (IPv4 / IPv6) to see its approximate location (country, region, city) along with the ISP and AS number. Useful for checking where entries in your access logs come from, or where a server or VPN exit is located.

IP address lookup

What this tool does

An IP address is a number that identifies a device on the internet. From its allocation records, you can estimate its approximate geographic location (country, region, city) as well as the ISP that provides the connection and its AS number. This tool lets you look up any IP address, not just your own.

For example, you can check which country an entry in your server access logs came from, or confirm where the exit server of the VPN you are using is located.

How to read the results

  • Country-level identification is fairly reliable, but city-level accuracy drops considerably. The city shown is often the location of the facility managing the IP rather than where the user actually is.
  • ISP / organization is the name of the operator that owns or runs the IP address. For a company server, this may show the company or a cloud provider name.
  • The AS number (autonomous system number) identifies the network that acts as a routing unit on the internet.
  • If you look up an IP that goes through a VPN or proxy, the location shown is that of the exit server, not the person using it.

Frequently asked questions

Can an IP address reveal someone's home address?

No. It reveals at most the ISP facility or allocation region. Street addresses and buildings cannot be identified. The idea that "an IP address exposes your home" is a misconception.

Why can't I look up private addresses such as 192.168.x.x?

Private addresses are only used inside home or office networks and do not correspond to any location on the internet. Loopback (127.0.0.1) and reserved ranges are excluded for the same reason.

Why is the location different from the actual one?

Location databases are built from ISP allocation records and similar sources, so update timing and allocation changes cause drift. Country-level results are mostly accurate, but city-level errors are common.

How do I check my own IP address?

The home page automatically shows the IP address you are currently connecting from along with its location. Entering your own IP in this tool gives the same result.
